Who developed Spirit Map?
Unity Church–Unitarian, through its consulting arm Unity Consulting, originally developed Spirit Map as a tool of accountability to its mission of spiritual transformation and "encouraging lives of integrity, service, and joy." Since then, the tool has been piloted (a) at the aggregate level in several congregations and (b) at the individual level with many individuals, including spiritual directors, seminary students, and interested lay people. Through these experiences, related feedback, and analysis, the instrument has been refined to its present form, including the 44 survey items. Our white paper, which you can download on our home page, provides more detail about the expertise of the people who developed the survey items. The paper also describes how the Spirit Map items align with the spiritual domains commonly found in spirituality research literature.

How does it work?
The Spirit Map survey contains:
- 44 statements related to spiritual well-being
- A list of congregational programs and activities
- How true it is of them (presence rating).
- How important each statement is to them (importance rating).
We provide three reinforcing analyses from the data congregants provide:
- An individual-level analysis that provides the percent of times each Spirit Map item occurs as a Signature Strength and as a Key Opportunity for individuals in your congregation, in rank order.
- An aggregate-level analysis that provides Signature Strengths and Key Opportunities for your congregation as a whole, based on average ratings.
- A Quadrant Map that shows how the 44 Spirit Map items relate to each other at the aggregate level and identifies the Signature Strengths and Key Opportunities..
Congregations can also make it possible for congregants who provide their Spirit Map information for the congregational analysis to receive their individual Spirit Map report. We charge per individual for this report, but offer a discount off of the usual individual report price.
